Family Run Cottage Fiber Mill

Overview: The goal of the Lavender & Honeycomb Fiber Mill is to create high quality fiber for spinning with a quick turnaround time and ability to process smaller amounts of fiber to support small business or individual producers. We cater directly to those wanting to hand spin their own fiber, are seeking natural dying options, want to use their own fiber for creating wearable items, and are looking to blend fiber for spinning. We plan to achieve this goal by building and operating a cottage style fiber processing mill. The mill will both provide a service to the fiber production community and create a product.
 

Problem Statement: It can be difficult for small fiber producers to find a mill that processes their fiber, and/or doesn't require blending with other fibers. We hope to assist these producers by utilizing the newer models of Brother Carder equipment. We will also offer fiber from our own animals for those who want to blend but don't have access to the fiber.

Mission Statement: Responsible development and sales of quality animals, natural products, and produce for our family and yours.

Vision: A community with easy access to quality animals, animal feed, wool and natural products.

Service:

The fiber mill will provide a means for individuals with fiber animals to process and develop their product for further marketing options.

In addition to processing to prepare for spinning, the mill will offer fiber blending options, washing options for local consumers, and natural dyes.

Although we would like to offer opportunities locally, we attend many fiber events and animal shows throughout the country each year so there would be availability for pick up/drop off at several locations. Customers can also access us through shipping.

Future opportunities will include fiber spinning.

Products:

The mill’s primary products will be battings and roving for spinners and fiber producers.

Secondary products will include felted products, washed fiber, fiber blending options and fiber dying.

Future products can include spun fibers, knitted fibers and fiber related classes

Market:

The target markets are fiber producers looking to refine their products by washing, picking, developing into roving or felting to diversify the types of products they can produce and sell. In addition, we will offer full-service spinning options at intermittent intervals to ensure fast processing for those only requesting the minimal services. 

Funding and Use: We are seeking funding to assist with purchase of the processing machines themselves, including shipping and set up. Once the machines are in place in the current building, we will begin working towards self-funding our permanent building.

Team: We are a small family owned organization currently. While we would like to expand in the future, I am primarily running all day to day operations with the assistance of my husband and sons as they are able.
